  • Enjoy breakfast with your child before coming to school.
  • Escort your child to the drop-off location each morning. Encourage him or her to walk in with their teacher.
  • Kiss your child goodbye and tell them to have a great day. Lingering or drawing out the goodbye creates more anxiety for your child as they wait and anticipate your departure.
  • Staying with your child only confuses them and makes leaving even harder. You are welcome to call the Day School office to check on your child.
  • Many preschoolers will cry when they first come to the Day School, no matter their age or previous experience. However, it is uncommon for a child to cry for an extended period of time (more than 10 or 15 minutes) or resist becoming involved with others their age who are happily playing. We do not want your child to remain upset unnecessarily and will call you if your child is unable to calm down and join the class. On occasion, we may develop a transition plan to help a child slowly work up to attending a full day of preschool.
  • If your child stays for naptime, we encourage parents to send a special lovey (pacifier, a small blanket, or a small stuffed animal) to help your child fall asleep. However, a child’s personal toys should not be brought to school.
  • When toys come to school they often cause lots of tears and can get broken. Please set your child up for a great drop-off and help them say goodbye to their toys before they leave home in the morning. This will help them tremendously to have a smoother drop-off.
  • If a toy accidentally sneaks in, we will do our best to collect it and keep it safe in the Day School office until a parent can collect it.
  • Make sure your child has their backpack and folder each day.
  • For students 2 years old and older, be sure you find an appropriately sized backpack. It should be large enough to carry their 9.4” × 11.4” folder, lunchbox, and cup, but small enough they can easily wear it.
  • Please do not leave medications, even over-the-counter items like diaper cream or hand sanitizer, in your child’s backpack.
  • Send your child to school with a labeled, spill-proof cup filled with your choice of uncarbonated beverage. Cups are refilled with water throughout the day.
  • Everything that comes to school with your child should be labeled with their name. This includes cups, lunchboxes, jackets, pacifiers, bottles, etc.
  • If sending a lunch from home, please cut food into small enough pieces to prevent choking. Nuts may not be served to children under 4 years old.
  • Make sure your child has a spare change of seasonally appropriate clothes (including socks and underwear) in their cubby. When they wear their spare clothes or underwear home, be sure to send in new ones the next day.
  • Even on colder days, teachers will often take students out briefly to enjoy fresh air and sunshine. Please be sure your child comes to school during the winter months with weather-appropriate outerwear.
  • Send your child to school wearing shoes. If your child is walking independently, they need shoes to keep their feet safe. This is also a safety concern in the event of a fire.
  • We recommend closed-toe tennis shoes for school. While boots and sandals are adorable on small children, they make it difficult to run, jump, and climb without tripping.
  • Check your child’s folder each evening and empty it of all important papers and artwork.
